Everything about caries — causes, symptoms, forms, and treatment

Tooth decay is damage to the hard surface of the tooth (enamel) caused by bacteria that convert sugars from food into acid. This acid destroys the enamel, which leads to tooth decay or the formation of cavities. Cavities can develop at any age. In the early stages of decay, you may notice white spots on the teeth, but if the condition progresses, it can lead to pain, sensitivity, or even root infection.

What causes tooth decay?

Tooth decay is contributed to by several factors:

1.     Insufficient hygiene
Irregular brushing or not flossing can cause plaque buildup, which creates a favorable environment for bacteria to multiply.

2.     Sugary foods and drinks
Sugary products, such as sweets or sodas, feed bacteria, which produce acid and damage enamel.

3.     Dry mouth
Saliva naturally protects teeth by neutralizing acid. Dry mouth, which is caused by medications or other factors, increases the risk of tooth decay.

4.     Genetics
Some people genetically have weaker enamel, which makes them more susceptible to tooth decay.

Treatment of tooth decay

If decay has already developed, your dentist will recommend appropriate treatment based on its severity:

1.     Fluoride therapy
In the early stages of decay, high-concentration fluoride products can be used to restore enamel.

2.     Dental filling
The dentist will remove the damaged tissue and fill the cavity with composite resin, amalgam, or another material.

3.     Dental crown
If decay has caused significant damage to the tooth, your dentist may recommend a metal-ceramic or ceramic crown.

4.     Root canal treatment
If caries reaches the root, the dentist will perform a root canal treatment to remove the infected tissue and save the tooth.

5.     Tooth extraction
In extreme cases, if the tooth is severely damaged, the dentist may recommend extracting it and inserting an implant or a bridge.

Prevention of dental caries

Caries can be prevented by following proper oral hygiene practices:

1.     Brush your teeth correctly
Brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes with fluoride-containing toothpaste. Fluoride strengthens enamel and protects against caries.

2.     Use floss
Daily use of dental floss or interdental brushes removes plaque between teeth where the toothbrush cannot reach.

3.     Reduce sugary foods
Avoid frequent consumption of sugary foods or drinks.

4.     Regular dentist visit to the dentist
Regular visits to the dentist (twice a year) allow for detecting caries at an early stage and performing professional cleaning.

5.     Use mouth wash
Antibacterial mouthwash reduces the amount of bacteria and promotes gum health.
